Sintra - Saint Peter's Day

Today, 29th June, is Saint Peter's Day, patron saint of Sintra.

Sintra is a fabulous village, like it was taken from a fairy tale. Scenery of many legends and stories, it is the ideal place to escape from the rush in Lisbon and relax, walking in its beautiful parks and gardens, visiting several palaces, or simply enjoying its beaches and coast.

My goal is to design touristic circuits including some of its wonders: Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, Sintra National Palace (photo), Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais Palace, Monserrate Palace, etc. Prices will be around 30 euro per person for circuits of 4-5 hours, or 50 euro for circuits of 8 hours, and will depend on several factors. Groups should not include more than 10 people. I will guide in English, Russian, Spanish or Portuguese languages. More informations will provided in the future.

Saint Peter's Day is therefore municipal holiday in Sintra. This date is celebrated here and marks the end of popular saints' festivals: Saint Anthony (June 13th), Saint John (June 24th) and Saint Peter (June 29th). In honor to dearest saints to Portuguese people, the streets of the country get full of balloons, arches and paper flowers. It is mandatory to eat sardines with corn bread and red wine.

This day is also very special to me because it is my father's anniversary. In fact, I owe this name to him, since when he was born, my grandmother wanted to follow the religious tradition and give the name Peter ("Pedro") to my father. Godparents, that time had substantial power in attribution of babies' names, chose Joseph ("José") instead. My granny got very sad about it and, as first grandson, I got the name Peter in order to make a correction, even if I was born on the 29th, but of July. I ended up with a biblical name, from one of the greatest apostles, but also the most common name in Portugal, since every boy of my age has the great probability to be called Peter or John ("João")...

Синтра сказочный посёлок, как из сказки. Место множество легенд и историй, это идеальное место, чтобы отдохнуть от движений в Лиссабоне и расслабиться, ходить в своих красивых парков и садов, посетив несколько дворцов, или просто наслаждаться своими пляжами и побережье.

Моя цель заключается в разработке туристических схем в том числе некоторые из его чудес: Дворец Пена, Мавританский замок, Национальный дворец Синтры (фото), Кинта да Регалейра, Дворец Сетеяша, Дворец Монсеррата и т.д. Цены будут около 30 евро на человека (4 -5 часов), или 50 евро (8 часов), и будет зависеть от нескольких факторов. Группы не должны более 10 человек. Я буду гидом на английском, русском, испанском или на португальском. Больше информации будет предоставлена ​​в будущем.

Поэтому День Святого Петра - праздник в Синтре. Hoje, 29 de Junho, é dia de São Pedro, padroeiro de Sintra.

Sintra é uma vila fabulosa, como que tirada de um conto de fadas. Cenário de muitas lendas e histórias, é o sítio ideal para escapar ao movimento de Lisboa e poder relaxar, passeando pelos seus belos parques e jardins, visitando inúmeros palácios ou simplesmente aproveitando suas praias e costa.

O meu objectivo será desenhar circuitos turísticos incluindo algumas das suas maravilhas: Palácio da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Palácio Nacional de Sintra (foto), Quinta da Regaleira, Palácio de Seteais, Palácio de Monserrate, etc. Os preços rondarão os 30 euros por pessoa em percursos de 4-5 horas, ou 50 euros para percursos de 8 horas, mas dependerão de diversos factores. Os grupos deverão ter um máximo de 10 pessoas. Servirei de guia em inglês, russo, espanhol ou português. Mais informações serão divulgadas no futuro.

O dia de São Pedro é assim feriado municipal em Sintra. Este dia é aqui festejado e marca também o encerramento dos festejos dos santos populares: Santo António (13 de Junho), São João (24 de Junho) e São Pedro (29 de Junho).  Em homenagem aos santos mais queridos dos Portugueses, as ruas do país enchem-se de balões, arcos e flores de papel. É obrigatório comer sardinha assada, acompanhada com broa e vinho tinto.

Este dia é igualmente bastante especial para mim, por corresponder ao dia de aniversário do meu pai. Indirectamente, devo-lhe o meu nome, dado que aquando do nascimento do meu pai, a minha avó pretendia seguir a tradição religiosa e dar o nome de Pedro ao meu pai. Os padrinhos, que naquele tempo tinham bastante poder na atribuição do nome aos bebés, optaram por José. A minha avó ficou bastante desgostosa e eu, sendo o primeiro neto, acabei por corrigir o sucedido, tendo ficado com o nome de Pedro, apesar de ter nascido no dia 29, mas de Julho. Acabei por ficar com um nome bíblico, pertencente a um grande apóstolo, mas também com o nome mais comum em Portugal, já que qualquer rapaz da minha faixa etária tem a forte possibilidade de ser chamado ou Pedro ou João...

The first photo obviously comes from my town, the town where I was born.

I was born here in the year of 1986, but this city is much older than me. Its date of foundation comes back in 1160, when Gualdim Pais, master of the Templar Knights, laid the first stone for the construction of the castle you can see on the top of the hill. Tomar can be a little and calm town, but I am really proud of it. Its history and past can't be underestimated. Here lived the valorous templar knights, who were replaced by the Order of Christ, a great responsible for the Portuguese discoveries, and whose cross adorned the sails of the boats departing to other continents. The Convent of Christ, UNESCO's world heritage site, is the ideal place to revisit this golden period of the Portuguese history.

Tomar, often called as " Garden City", has elegant parks or gardens, where it is possible to relax and look at the river Nabão, or, in alternative for the most active, to make some jogging and hiking in the beautiful National Woods of the Seven Hills.

For these and others reasons, the Holy Grail may have not been found here (yet), but it is certainly a city with other treasures to offer to its visitors.

In the upcoming future I expect to program trips and serve as local guide to tourist who want to visit my beloved and Tomar, located only two hours away from Lisbon.

A primeira foto tinha de ser obrigatoriamente da minha cidade, a cidade que me viu nascer.

Nasci aqui no ano de 1986, mas esta cidade cidade é muito mais antiga do que eu. A sua fundação data do ano de 1160, quando D.Gualdim Pais, mestre da Ordem dos Templários, depositou a primeira pedra para a construção do castelo que pode ser visto no topo da colina. Tomar pode ser uma cidade pequena e pacata, mas na qual tenho muito orgulho. O seu passado e história não podem ser subestimados. Aqui viveram os valorosos cavaleiros templários, os quais sucedeu a Ordem de Cristo, grande responsável pelas descobertas portuguesas, sendo a sua cruz ostentada nas próprias caravelas que partiam para outros continentes. O Convento de Cristo, património mundial da UNESCO, é o cenário ideal para revisitar esse período dourado da história de Portugal.

Tomar, muitas vezes apelidada de "Cidade Jardim", apresenta elegantes parques e jardins, onde é possível relaxar e contemplar o rio Nabão, ou, em alternativa para os mais activos, caminhar e exercitar-se na bela Mata Nacional dos Setes Montes.

Por estas e outras razões, o Santo Graal pode (ainda) não ter sido encontrado aqui, mas certamente que esta cidade possui outros tesouros para oferecer aos seus visitantes.

Num futuro próximo espero programar viagens e servir de guia local aos turistas que quiserem visitar a minha querida Tomar, localizada a apenas de 2 horas de Lisboa.
