Kolka, the End of the World...

It may be a pain in the ass to come to this place, but it is definitely worth it. Cape Kolka is often referred as the "end of the world" and it is indeed really hard to reach this place, especially if you travel by public transports as I do. There is only a daily bus ride from and to Riga, and connections with the nearest city, Talsi, are also not so good.

Nevertheless, Kolka is an enchanting place, ideal to go for a walk along the coastline and to enjoy idyllic moments of solitude.

Arriving to Cape Kolka, we see a monument that calls for attention to the turbulence of these waters. It is possible to read on one side  "For people, ships and Livian earth" and on the other "For those the sea took away". It is not surprising, since Kolka lies on a strategic point: the junction of the Gulf of Riga and the Great Baltic Sea. Thus, the currents are very treacherous. The historic of accidents and crashes here is said to be the greatest in the whole Baltic Sea. In order to mitigate this fact and reduce the number of tragedies, one lighthouse was built in 1884 on an artificial island, about 6 km from the coast.

In contrast, going through the forest extended almost till the cape, if there was not the terrible storm in 2005 that put several trees down and from which there are still signs today (first photo), we find a scenery of pure tranquility. On its tip, the rocks mark the point where the land ends and see begins (second photo).

This place is now reachable for all who want to visit it, but it was not always like that. During the times of former Soviet Union, there was a military base here and therefore Kolka was closed for civilians. Maybe this contributed to make this place even more special, because here the time has literally stopped and, apart from a small house selling souvenirs made of ambar and serving coffees, there is nothing but the nature here.

The pictures were taken still in the end of winter. I am sure that in summer this place shows a different beauty.
