Sintra - Saint Peter's Day

Today, 29th June, is Saint Peter's Day, patron saint of Sintra.

Sintra is a fabulous village, like it was taken from a fairy tale. Scenery of many legends and stories, it is the ideal place to escape from the rush in Lisbon and relax, walking in its beautiful parks and gardens, visiting several palaces, or simply enjoying its beaches and coast.

My goal is to design touristic circuits including some of its wonders: Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, Sintra National Palace (photo), Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais Palace, Monserrate Palace, etc. Prices will be around 30 euro per person for circuits of 4-5 hours, or 50 euro for circuits of 8 hours, and will depend on several factors. Groups should not include more than 10 people. I will guide in English, Russian, Spanish or Portuguese languages. More informations will provided in the future.

Saint Peter's Day is therefore municipal holiday in Sintra. This date is celebrated here and marks the end of popular saints' festivals: Saint Anthony (June 13th), Saint John (June 24th) and Saint Peter (June 29th). In honor to dearest saints to Portuguese people, the streets of the country get full of balloons, arches and paper flowers. It is mandatory to eat sardines with corn bread and red wine.

This day is also very special to me because it is my father's anniversary. In fact, I owe this name to him, since when he was born, my grandmother wanted to follow the religious tradition and give the name Peter ("Pedro") to my father. Godparents, that time had substantial power in attribution of babies' names, chose Joseph ("José") instead. My granny got very sad about it and, as first grandson, I got the name Peter in order to make a correction, even if I was born on the 29th, but of July. I ended up with a biblical name, from one of the greatest apostles, but also the most common name in Portugal, since every boy of my age has the great probability to be called Peter or John ("João")...

Sarajevo, the trigger for the World War I

Sarajevo, 28th June 1914. In this fatidical day, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and her wife, Sophie of Hohenberg were murdered in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia, one of the provinces of the empire. After a first failed attempt with a bomb and a speech at the former building of the City Hall, now the National Library (first photo), the company followed its way and Franz Ferdinand his fatal destiny. Passing the Latin Bridge (second photo), Gavrilo Princip, member of the organization "Black Hand" shot twice killing the potential heirs of Austro-Hungarian Empire, with the goal to claim the authority of these territories back to the hands of the south Slavic people and consequently the creation of a Great Serbia. This assassination was the trigger for the beginning of the First World War in Europe during a time of great tension and rivalries among countries. Today, after 100 years, Vienna Philarmonic Orchestra had a grand performance to mark this date and to celebrate the reconstruction of the National Library, place where the concert was held.

Sarajevo is a fantastic city, where West meets East. Here is possible to observe a clear division of the city between its typical Austro-Hungarian architecture, establishing a contrast with the Ottoman quarter Baščaršija (third photo), as well as the houses populating the hills of the city. In this city several cultures and religions lived together: Muslims, Christian Catholics and Orthodox and Jews. It is perhaps one of the only cities in the world where it is possible to find several mosques, a catholic cathedral, an orthodox church and synagogue only few meters distant. The recent history has associated this city with black periods, due to various conflicts that happened in this city, and that destroyed much of its heritage, including priceless books and manuscripts, after the fire in the National Library during the civil war in former Yugoslavia. In fact, Sarajevo Haggadah, written in 1350, is considered  by many to be the most valuable book in the world, and has miraculously escaped from an attack to the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where today can be found.

The Balkans are a very special region for me and Sarajevo is a mandatory stop of my tours around this region. Here I have passed 4 times and I can't get tired of coming back. Sarajevo is year by year better prepared to receive tourists and it is surprisingly very safe. Personally, there is something in the air that makes feel like home. I strongly recommend a visit to this special and lively city. For sure I will have the opportunity to publish more pictures and comments about this city and others in the Balkans.

Trans-Siberian 1 year...

Vladivostok, Russian Federation - 27th of July 2013 (11:59 local time)

The great moment: arrival to Vladivostok, where the sun rises first in Continental Asia.

This is certainly a life-time adventure. Me and Andreja recall with nostalgia all the adventures experienced, as well as the secret places visited, some of them only reachable by train. Behind us there is the marker for the end of the longest railway in the world. It's possible to read: "Here ends the Great Trans-Siberian Railway". The number 9288 represents the number of kilometers that are necessary to connect Yaroslavl Terminal Station in Moscow with Vladivostok, a port city in the Russian Far East, on the Sea Japan and close to North Korea. Additional kilometers were done in order to visit other interesting cities in Siberia located out of the main railway. It was an intensive journey, very physically demanding and involving other incredible numbers: a total of 180 hours and 3 minutes spent in trains. Yes, 7 days and a half on the rails of the biggest country in the world.

It was 22 days, 16 train tickets, several stops and mythical route: Moscow - Perm - Yekaterinburg - Tobolsk - Tyumen - Omsk - Barabinsk - Kuybyshev - Novosibirsk - Tomsk - Tayga - Krasnoyarsk - Irkutsk - Listvyanka - Lake Baikal - Slyudyanka - Ulan-Ude - Chita - Blagoveshchensk - Birobidzhan - Khabarovsk - Vladivostok.

Our faces of satisfaction are evident. The moment was for celebration. We bought vodka and glasses and we toasted, even if it is something forbidden at Russian train stations. Mission accomplished!! Cheers!

PS: For the ones interested in the fantastic journey, full of adventures, I will be available for any question concerning eventual tips, advices, doubts or even planning of a future trip.

The first picture and post...

The first photo obviously comes from my town, the town where I was born.

I was born here in the year of 1986, but this city is much older than me. Its date of foundation comes back in 1160, when Gualdim Pais, master of the Templar Knights, laid the first stone for the construction of the castle you can see on the top of the hill. Tomar can be a little and calm town, but I am really proud of it. Its history and past can't be underestimated. Here lived the valorous templar knights, who were replaced by the Order of Christ, a great responsible for the Portuguese discoveries, and whose cross adorned the sails of the boats departing to other continents. The Convent of Christ, UNESCO's world heritage site, is the ideal place to revisit this golden period of the Portuguese history.

Tomar, often called as " Garden City", has elegant parks or gardens, where it is possible to relax and look at the river Nabão, or, in alternative for the most active, to make some jogging and hiking in the beautiful National Woods of the Seven Hills.

For these and others reasons, the Holy Grail may have not been found here (yet), but it is certainly a city with other treasures to offer to its visitors.

In the upcoming future I expect to program trips and serve as local guide to tourist who want to visit my beloved and Tomar, located only two hours away from Lisbon.

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog, which I expect to become our blog. My name is Pedro Freire and I am currently embracing a new personal project. The last years were rich in trips and adventures, and have awakened in me an enormous passion to discover new destinations and contact with other cultures. During this period I was happy to have the opportunity to visit 40 countries and around 350 cities, while learning new languages.

Thus, I now would like to share with other people some of stories and experiences lived, as well as the culture, history and heritage of my beloved country: Portugal.

Therefore I will be available, in a first stage, to plan tourist circuits across Portugal and work as local tourist and historical guide around the streets of Lisbon and other sites in the country. I will not hide the ambition to extend them in the future to other countries (Balkans, Russia, Trans-Siberian Railway, Spain, Central and Eastern Europe, etc.), using the network that I have built during my previous trips.

More information will be provided in future posts.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.
